  22.      Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tuscon, has been named Principal
  23. Investigator for the imaging system for the MESUR Pathfinder lander, NASA
  24. announced today.
  25.  
  26.      MESUR (for Mars Environmental Survey) Pathfinder is a small
  27.  
  28. Discovery-class mission that NASA proposes to launch to Mars in 1996 which will
  29. place a lander and rover on the surface of Mars in 1997.  Once on the surface,
  30. the camera will obtain a 360- degree panoramic image of the landing site and
  31. also will acquire images of specific areas at intervals during the year-long
  32. mission.
  33.  
  34.      Martin Marietta Astronautics Group, Denver, Colo., was named as the prime
  35. instrument contractor.  The Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy, Lindau, Germany,
  36. will provide the image detector and its supporting electronics.
  37.  
  38.      Smith's proposal for an imaging system for the MESUR Pathfinder lander was
  39. submitted earlier this year in response to a NASA announcement of opportunity
  40. for the mission.  Dr. Wesley Huntress, NASA Associate Administrator for the
  41. Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. was the selecting official.
  42.  
  43. Imaging System Description
  44.  
  45.      The camera is a side-by-side charged-coupled device (CCD) stereo imager
  46. which sits on top of a "jack-in-the-box" mast that pops up one meter above the
  47. lander.  The camera has a 12-position color filter wheel and is fully
  48. controllable in both elevation and side-to-side (azimuth) motion.  The optics
  49. do not require active focusing.
  50.  
  51.      The field of view for each eye is 14.4 degrees square and has a resolution
  52. of six-tenths of a millimeter near the lander.
  53.  
  54.      The filter wheel contains eight color filters optimized for Mars geology,
  55. three color filters for atmospheric water vapor and dust measurements and one
  56. broadband filter for stereo imaging with both eyes.
  57.  
  58.      The camera will be used for science experiments, including filter-wheel
  59. spectral mapping of the landing site to determine its composition and to
  60. identify rocks which may be designated as targets for further investigation.
  61. Spectral mapping also will study weathering processes and products in the dust,
  62. soil and rocks of Mars.
  63.  
  64.      Images also will be taken to study phenomena which occur over time, such
  65. as frost, dune formation and seasonal changes.
  66.  
  67.      NASA also announced the selection of Dr. Jens Martin Knudsen of the
  68. University of Copenhagen as a co-investigator, to provide a magnetic properties
  69. investigation for the mission in conjunction with Smith's team.  He will
  70. provide five magnets of varying strengths to capture wind-blown magnetic dust
  71. particles.

  73.      Other co-investigators for the imaging experiment are Drs. Robert Singer,
  74. Martin Tomasko, Lyn Doose and Daniel Britt, all of the University of Arizona,
  75. Tuscon; Dr. Larry Soderblom, U.S. Geological Survey, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Dr.
  76. H. Uwe Keller, Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy.

  78.      The Arizona team proposed to develop and deliver camera hardware and one
  79. flight instrument, accompanied by operational and data compression software.
  80. The effort, estimated at $5 million in fiscal year 1992 dollars, will culminate
  81. with the delivery of the flight imaging system in late 1995.

  83.      The MESUR Pathfinder will use a small robotic rover to explore the region
  84. within about 50 meters of the landing site.  In contrast to the three-color
  85. imaging provided by the two Viking landers in the late 1970s, the MESUR
  86. Pathfinder lander imaging system will be capable of imaging in a variety of
  87. spectral bands to determine mineral content within view of the lander.
  88.  
  89.      The spectral channels are particularly sensitive to iron and pyroxene
  90. minerals -- dark, silicon-based, crystal-like rocks.
  91.  
  92.      The primary mission is for 1 month on the surface of Mars, with a goal of
  93. 1 year of extended mission.

  95.      NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., will manage the MESUR
  96. Pathfinder mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Headquarters,
  97. Washington, D.C.

  118. Space Shuttle Discovery's main engines shut off during the last seconds of
  119. countdown this morning to scrub the launch of the STS-51 mission.  This was
  120. Discovery's third launch attempt.
  121.  
  122. NASA managers are continuing to evaluate the data to determine what caused the
  123. onboard computers to halt the launch.  At present, there is no word as to how
  124. long the mission will be delayed.  The Post Shutdown News Conference will be
  125. today at 1:30 p.m.  EDT on NASA TV.

  129. Memorial services for former X-15 pilot Milton O. Thompson will be held August
  130. 17 at the Dryden Flight Research Facility, Edwards, Calif. Services will begin
  131. at 9:00 a.m.  EDT in the auditorium.  At the time of his death, Thompson was
  132. Dryden's Chief Engineer. Thompson was the first person to fly a lifting body.
  133. He joined NASA, then NACA, in 1956.  Thompson was 67.

  137. Scheduled for August 31 through Sept. 1, NASA will conduct a workshop for news
  138. media at the Johnson Space Center. The workshop will familiarize reporters with
  139. the training and operations for the first servicing mission of the Hubble Space
  140. Telescope.

  142. Also, preparations for the upcoming STS-61 mission are continuing on schedule
  143. as some flight hardware arrived at the Kennedy Space Center. Some of this
  144. flight hardware will hold the Hubble replacement components inside Endeavour's
  145. payload bay during the mission.
  146.  
  147. The Hubble servicing mission is scheduled for launch in December. Mission
  148. duration is targeted for 11 days with five spacewalks planned.  The seven
  149. member crews mission objective is to service the space telescope.

  215. The frequency is 3960 MHz with an orbital position of 72 degrees West
  216. Longitude. This is a full transponder service and will be operational 24 hours
  217. a day.

  220. Comstore, the mission TV schedule computer bulletin board service.  Call
